Meaning
Collective शब्द collection से बना हुआ है जिसका meaning होता है संग्रह। जो अकेला नही होता बल्कि एक साथ कई होते है।
इस तरह से यह तो सपष्ट हो गया इसके नाम से हीं कि यह noun ऐसे शब्द को denote करती है जो collection में होता है जो group में होता है।
Collective noun को हिंदी में संग्रहवाचक संज्ञा कहते है।
जब इसका उदाहरण देखेंगे तो आपको अच्छी तरह से clear हो जाएगा कि collective noun होता क्या है लेकिन उससे पहले collective noun की definition देख ले।
Definition – परिभाषा
Collective nouns are naming words used for groups of animals, things, persons and places taken together as a unit.
or,
A noun which denotes a class, a group or a collection of things is called collective noun.
वैसा noun जिससे एक group या एक संग्रह का बोध होता है समूहवाचक संज्ञा कहते है।
यह group व्यक्ति का हो सकता है, वस्तु का हो सकता है या जानवर का हो सकता है।
जैसे class, army, people, crowd.
Examples – उदाहरण
Class – यह एक student से नही बनता बल्कि बहुत सारे students के समूह से बनता है।
Army – यह soldiers का ग्रुप होता है
Crowd – जब बहुत सारे आदमी एक साथ होते है तब जाकर भीड़ बनती है।
वाक्य में collective noun के उदाहरण देखते है।

अब समस्या यह आती है कि English Grammar में तो बहुत सारे collective nouns है तो क्या हमे सारे collective nouns याद करने पड़ेंगे ताकि मैं इंग्लिश अच्छे से बोल सकू।
तो यह जरूरी नहीं कि आप सारे collective nouns को याद रखे लेकिन फिर भी कुछ बहुत हीं common collective nouns को याद रखना बहुत अच्छा है (जो ऊपर दिए गए है) लेकिन फिर भी अगर आपको कभी वाक्य में collective nouns का इस्तेमाल करना पड़ जाए और आपको collective noun याद न हो तो आप word ‘group’ या ‘bunch’ का इस्तेमाल कर सकते है।
जैसे –
Gang शब्द के लिए A group of criminals
Pack शब्द के लिए a group of wolves
Bouquet शब्द के लिए a bunch of flowers
Bunch का प्रयोग मुख्य रूप से things (वस्तु) के साथ करना ज्यादा बेहतर होगा।
Rules
Collective noun के दो rules याद रखना बहुत जरूरी है|
1. Collective noun को capitalise फॉर्म में नही लिखा जाता जब तक कि यह sentence का पहला शब्द न हो तब तक यानि की अगर यह वाक्य के बीच में आए तो Proper noun की तरह इसको कैपिटलाइज नही किया जाता जैसे
Everyone in the audience applauded loudly when Arijit Singh appeared on stage.
इस वाक्य में
audience (जो एक collective noun है) और
Arijit Singh(यह एक proper noun है)
पर गौर करे दोनो word वाक्य के बीच में है लेकिन audience को कैपिटलाइज़ फॉर्म में नही लिखा गया है जबकि Arijit Singh को कैपिटलाइज़ फॉर्म में लिखा गया है।
क्योंकि सिर्फ proper noun को हीं कैपिटलाइज फॉर्म में लिखा जाता है अन्य किसी noun को नही।
इसी तरह से कुछ और उदाहरण देखते है –

Sahil is student of Class 6. ×
Sahil is student of class 6. ✓
2. Collective noun एक group को एक unit कि तरह denote करती है इसलिए ज्यादातर समय collective noun के साथ सिंगुलर verb का प्रयोग होता है।
जैसे-
The crowd was screaming. ✓
The crowd were screaming. ×
Is government making an announcement today? ✓
Are government making an announcement today?×
The family is one of nature’s masterpieses.✓
The family are one of nature’s masterpieses.×
Collective noun में सबसे बड़ा कन्फ्यूजन होता है कि collective noun को singular noun कि तरह प्रयोग करे कि plural noun कि तरह।
तो इसका जवाब है कि यह depend करती है कि वाक्य में collective noun किस तरह से प्रयोग हुआ है।
अगर वाक्य में collective noun से singular का बोध होता है तो verb भी singular हीं इस्तेमाल होगा।
और अगर वाक्य में collective noun से plural का बोध होता है तो verb भी plural हीं इस्तेमाल होगा।
English में police शब्द को plural माना गया है इसलिए इसके साथ plural verb का हीं प्रयोग बेहतर होता है।
